Cooking French Fries

Sustainable Kitchen Instant Win Game

There are also many ways to begin living a sustainable lifestyle that don’t include spending money! More like, becoming conscious of the harmful products you use in your kitchen and making a gradual shift to living in a way that’s not so wasteful. 

Simple Steps to a Sustainable Kitchen

Step one, stop food waste. Become aware of what you already have in your kitchen, make a meal plan and THEN go to the grocery store. This way, you save food and money! Check out our Reverse Meal Plan for more tips on this method of living sustainably.

Step two, start using sustainable storage in the kitchen. Don’t start throwing away all of the plastic containers that you own! But as they begin to get old or if the containers you have are already old and stained, recycle and replace them with eco-friendly storage methods like bees wax wraps, food huggers, or silicone bags. There are also silicone covers that can fit over almost any bowl, baking pan or cup!

The third step is to become more conscious of the cleaners you’re using in your kitchen. Many cleaners contain chemicals that can irritate your lungs or nose, cause headaches or other severe health problems. Bottom line, if its not good for us, its probably not good to send down our drains and into the environment.

In my house, we like to use a white vinegar, water and essential oil mixture to clean the kitchen because vinegar is an all natural disinfectant and we reuse the same glass spray bottle every time! Check out this post from Arcadia Blog for How to DIY easy sustainable cleaning products.

Fourth, use reusable bags at the grocery store! I think this is one of the easiest steps because I know you have a drawer in your house full of plastic grocery bags waiting to be used so just start with those. Instead of using new grocery bags or fresh produce bags, start reusing the ones you already have. 

Once those have run their course, recycle and look into reusable bags on amazon you can go as basic or as fancy as you want. Also most grocery stores sell reusable bags for $1 and have a place to recycle plastic grocery bags.

For the fifth and final step, start recycling. If you are already a pro at recycling, start to take the time and check your plastics to make sure they are recyclable and clean out the containers that have sauce and whatnot stuck to the sides. 

Educate yourself about what the recycling labels on packaging mean so you recycle the right way, you can start on this website!

Steamy Kitchen Update

This is 49.

For the first time in my life, I feel like I am “all the things” that I dreamt of being. Well, maybe not *all* but certainly I think this season of my life will make the highlight reel.

• I’m strong
• Genuinely happy
• Thriving
• Loving
• Capable

 

It took many, many months of feeling out and getting used to my new rhythm and season of life.

It’s like learning a new song that you like.

After a few listens, you start pick up the catchy bits of the lyrics.

A few more times, you can sing along with the chorus and, if you’re like me, garble some of the verses (“Money for nothin’ and chips for free”).

One day, you find yourself walking in to the beat, your steps in sync with the drum beat or bass rhythm.

Hello, 49….I like your groove.

 

Have you been in your own groove lately or out of tune? I would love to know! ♪

For those a little disconnected from that inner rhythm, when is the last time you turned on your favorite song?

The one that you cannot help yourself but move along and sing to the second it comes on!

How to stop bananas from ripening too fast:

Speaking of monkeys – let’s talk bananas!

 

There are a few simple ways to avoid your bananas from ripening too fast!

1. Keep them in a bundle and away from other fruits, preferably hanging up!

2. Wrap the stem  of the bunch with plastic wrap. Since bananas release ethylene gas through their stems which leads to ripening, wrapping them will help minimize this.

• Speaking of wifi connection, it took a couple of attempts to connect the Vacos Cam to my wifi; however, it did successfully connect at the end of the day!
• The app proved slightly confusing and I could not figure out how to use the Cloud Storage–I can never figure out the cloud though! However, I did go here to ask and seek answers to my questions. It was a bit of a hit or miss if I found my answers, but the Vacos community seems to be extremely helpful and responsive!

Favorite Vacos Cam Quality

This security camera allows you to talk on with the visitor anywhere via your smartphone. You can confirm your package delivery when you are in the office and you can shout at and scare off intruders from anywhere!

Furry Friends Memory Game Photo Contest!

You may have recently seen that we have launched a custom Memory Game to play on Steamy Kitchen for not only fun but also to test out and practice our cognition and memory! You can check out the memory game here if you haven’t yet!

It can be extremely hard to get up and go to the gym some days so let this $100 gift card be your motivation. You can do some research on different gyms and find which one you like best. Get excited about it, make a commitment to yourself, get out and get your blood pumping. It will feel soo good I promise!

• spending time with friends that I love
• waking up early and making a cup of coffee in the french press

Your list can be as simple or as detailed as you would like, I like to try and focus on the simple things!

Eat what makes you happy! No, not bags of potato chips and packs of cookies. I mean find meals that make you excited to cook. Meals that make your body feel good on the inside and out.

• getting a massage
• taking dance classes 

Getting active can be fun, you just. have to get creative!

Try new things! It is so healthy for your mind to be engaged in something new. Continuing to complete the same tasks every day becomes boring mindless.  

Challenge yourself with things that you have always wanted to try like learning how to crochet, writing poetry, or maybe starting a garden.

All of these activities are just an amazon click away. There are also many engaging activities you can find on your phone or computer like playing games or editing pictures.

Keep an ongoing monologue with yourself. Journaling is beneficial in many ways, especially if you are a person that struggles to share thoughts and feelings with other people. Have a conversation with yourself instead! 

Journaling will help you come to realizations about your problems, fears and anxieties. This way you can begin to approach them and face them for a healthier mental space.
