Salmon Blini Board Recipe

Ever tried blinis? I love that word actually. It makes me want to pronounce it “buh-li-ni”. Kinda like if bologna had an “i” in the middle. But then you look at it, and it’s as simple as can be: blini. Like it’s an app or a digital assistant. (“Blini, tell me what the weather is going to be like tomorrow.”)

If you’re not sure what a blini is, it’s basically a tiny Eastern European pancake. Top it with a few garnishes (or just butter) and you’ve got yourself a traditional Russian dish. (If the name doesn’t make even MORE sense to you at this point, just imagine someone saying “blini” in a Russian accent. Beautiful, right?) Stick ’em on a board just like you would charcuterie, and you have a fancy, fun little crowd-pleaser.

We recently tried the Kaluga Fusion Sturgeon from Great Taste and did a whole review on it. You can check it out here. I didn’t break down in great detail how the blinis were made in that post, so we’re doing that today! Ready to make your own beautiful blini board?

Why You Need To Make This Blini Board

Kaluga Sturgeon Caviar on a Salmon blini spread

  • Couldn’t Be Easier: These are super easy peasy (though quite fancy!) little appetizers or finger foods. You can whip them up in about 5 minutes.
  • They Command a Crowd: They’re great for parties and gatherings.
  • There’s No Cooking Involved: You buy all the ingredients ready to go from the grocery store.
  • They’re Wildly Versatile: Don’t like salmon? Use another fish. Don’t like caviar? Use a different garnish. Customize to your (or your party guests’) liking!
  • They’re so much fun to eat!

Ingredients to Make Your Salmon Blini Board

Ingredients for a blini spread

  • Blinis (obviously)
  • Creme fraiche
  • Smoked salmon (or your favorite ready-to-eat packaged fish)
  • Caviar
  • Microgreens (or green garnish of your choosing)

How to Make this Salmon Blini Board – Step By Step

Open your package of blinis and spread them out onto a board. I’ve used a small one for this small serving, but if you’re feeding a crown, you’ll obviously need a bigger board or a few boards!

Blinis on a board

Smear a good amount of creme fraiche on each blini.

Spoon on some creme fraiche

Top that creme fraiche with some ready-to-eat smoked salmon. I staggered my spread with smoked rainbow trout as well.

Garnish with your choice of fish

Spoon some caviar on top of each piece of fish. Don’t do what I did here and use a metal spoon (it’s all I had at the moment). Use a wooden, plastic, or mother of pearl spoon with your caviar so the metal doesn’t react with your caviar and ruin the taste.

Add some caviar to your blini spread

Now, top that caviar with microgreens. Mine ended up being a little too stemmy, so I suggest finding some microgreens or a different garnish that’s more leafy. (Cilantro would work nicely!) Feel free to mix it up with a number of different fish (or tofu!) and garnishes for some variety!

Garnish with some microgreens

Last step: Enjoy!

FAQs

Do my blinis have to be savory?

Not at all! If you want to make some savory blinis, top that creme fraiche with fruit instead of fish and add a drizzle of honey or even chocolate sauce. Don’t like creme fraiche? Try nutella! Mix and match til you find what you like!

What else can I put on a blini?

Other additions to blinis include butter, jam, sour cream, minced meat, prosciutto, cheeses (like brie!), boiled eggs, mushrooms, roast beef, eggplant, lemon juice, olive oil, seaweed, balsamic vinegar, yogurt, caramel, cream cheese, garlic butter, nuts, cranberry sauce, and so much more! The world is literally your oyster when it comes to making blinis!

Can I make my own blinis? Or do I have to buy them at a store?

You can easily make your own blinis just by making super small pancakes with pancake mix or any pancake recipe! If you do want to buy them, they’re available at Whole Foods or even Amazon.

Can I warm my blinis?

Yes, blinis are best served toasty or a little warmed (before you place the toppings on, obviously.)

The Ultimate Spring Cleaning for Your Home & Your Mind

Spring is here! What kind of vibes do you get around this time of year? What does spring look like in your mind? Egg hunts? Bees everywhere? Seasonal allergies? (Yeah, me too.) Spring is a time of renewal, and for me, it comes with a random urge to revamp and refresh, and that starts with making room for new things in my life.

Obviously, in the simplest way, this can mean spring cleaning (or as I like to call it, spring purging), but it’s also about what you’re letting go within you. Old ways. Limiting beliefs. Toxic relationships. Bad habits. Negative self-talk. The list can go on and on.

It’s the perfect time of year to reassess what you want in your life, both materially and energetically. So today, we’re focusing on looking at what you surround yourself with, both inside and outside of your head, with fresh eyes and considering what you can let go to make room for better things, be they opportunities, perspectives, peace, or simply… space.

Before we move forward, I want to offer you a challenge: Think of this year’s spring cleaning as a ritual for personal growth, and see what good things flow to you for the rest of this year. Sound doable? Great! Let’s hop to it!

Welcome to springtime!

The Origins of Spring Cleaning

Where the heck did spring cleaning come from? Did someone just wake up one day and think, “Yep, it’s time to scrub the floor”? Not exactly. The origins of spring cleaning have actually been traced back to several cultures.

For example, the Iranian tradition of “khooneh tekouni” (which means “shaking the house”). Nowruz, or the Persian New Year, falls on the first day of spring and in preparation for this event, many Iranians spotlessly clean and polish their homes to welcome the new year.

In the ancient Jewish practice, homes were thoroughly cleansed before Passover, to the point where not even a single crumb of leavened bread is to remain. And in the Chinese Lunar New Year tradition, you should sweep out the old year’s dust to make space for luck and fortune in the new year. So, as you can see, spring cleaning is a long-held tradition linked to many cultures around the world.

The Benefits of Spring Cleaning

A state of zen

Okay, so we’ve established that spring cleaning is ancient and pretty universal. But what’s in it for you? Turns out, a lot.

On a physical level, spending your time in a clean, organized space can actually reduce stress and fatigue. Ever noticed how a cluttered room can make you feel overwhelmed? Science says that’s legit. Clearing out clutter can help decrease cortisol levels and make you feel calmer and more in control.

Then, of course, there’s the allergy relief aspect. While April showers bring May sneezing fits, regular cleaning keeps allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and pollen at bay. If for no other reason, do it for your sinuses!

Decluttering is a little like detoxing your surroundings, which can give you a serious mental boost. When you create a sanctuary for yourself, you make room to unwind and recharge. AND, tidying up (especially when you’ve been putting it off for a while) can give you a sense of achievement and light up that reward center of your brain.

What’s more… have you ever had a meditative experience around the act of organizing? For me, I can sometimes get to a place of focus and zen while cleaning. It makes sense, because it’s a physical activity that can help quiet the mind, and give you the space to reflect and, who knows? Maybe you’ll even hatch some brilliant ideas while you’re cleaning!

Outer Spring Cleaning: Room-by-Room Renewal

Closet spring cleaning

Alright, it’s high time we grab our cleaning gloves and put on our most pumped-up playlist. Are you ready to transform your spaces to reflect the best version of you? Great! Here are some focus areas:

The Closet

Start with your closet. Feels personal, right? Each piece of clothing seems to tell a story. A concert here. A first date there. You definitely have something from high school in there too, right? But, let’s face it, when was the last time you wore that sequined top? Exactly. If your closet is bursting at the seams, it’s time to ask yourself the Kondo question: Does this spark joy? No, let’s go even further: Does this piece reflect who I am today? If it feels like a regret waiting to happen to part with it, but you haven’t worn it in FOREVER, consider at least folding it nicely and storing it somewhere else. (I keep one of those fabric Ikea zipper box bags under my bed for things like this.)

For that which you feel okay parting with, donate it. Give that shirt or dress the chance to play a role in someone else’s story. Besides, now you’ve made room for pieces that match your current vibe and values! Remember, your wardrobe is like your personal brand, so let’s make sure it’s saying what you want it to.

The Kitchen

The heart of your home is often a museum of past culinary phases. (C’mon, you know it’s true.) That fondue set gathering dust? It might just be time to bid it a fond(ue) farewell. Also look out for expired spices and any gadgets you never use. (I’m looking at you, avocado slicer.) What remains should inspire you to cook meals that nourish both your body and mind. When in doubt, donate it.

The Living Room

The living room is where life happens. It’s where we lounge, laugh, and host guests. And if the living room feels cluttered, there’s a good chance your mind does too. This is where we make memories and connections, so by decluttering and thoughtfully arranging your living room, you’re setting the energy you want to reside in and the energy you want to attract. Keep only what serves a purpose, whether it’s for comfort or conversation. This doesn’t mean your space should look like a showroom. It should look like, well, YOU. The interior of your mind should be the interior of your home, in the best way possible.

The Home Office

For many of us, the home office is where ambitions become reality, which is kinda hard to do when you’re drowning in a sea of papers and tangled cords. This isn’t just about finding your desk under all that chaos (though, yes, it kind of is). It’s also about clearing a path for your thoughts and ideas. Respecting your thoughts and ideas. Showing them that you welcome them. That there’s space for them. And, a streamlined workspace can lead to a more focused mind, which is a good thing. Besides, wouldn’t it be nice to actually use your desk for work instead of storage?

The Garage

Thought it might be easy to, let’s not forget the garage, the place where hobbies and holiday decorations go to hibernate. But what if we reimagined it? What if we could transform it into another living space? A space that actually serves your current interests. Whether you want to set up a workshop, a home gym, or just be able to park your car in there (revolutionary, right?!), reclaim that valuable space for whatever ignites your passion.

Inner Spring Clean: Decluttering Heart, Mind, and Soul

Spring Flowers

Okay. We’ve tackled the physical spaces. (Didn’t that feel great?) But let’s not stop there. The real magic happens when we start decluttering on the inside. It’s time for the inner spring clean, where we sort through our emotional closet, dust off those mental shelves, and clear our spiritual windows of debris. It’s time to get real about letting go. Ready?

The Heart

The heart is the collector of memories and emotions. It’s what prompts us to hold onto old love letters, grudges, and everything in between. But just like an overstuffed drawer, it’s time to sift through what’s worth keeping. Consider the act of forgiving (yourself and others), letting go of past hurts, and making peace with relationships that have run their course. And this doesn’t mean forgetting. It means choosing not to let old pain clutter your capacity for new love and joy. Keep the lessons, ditch the bitterness, and see just how much lighter you feel.

The Mind

Our minds are a lot like browsers with too many tabs open: thoughts, worries, plans, a random song lyric looping on endless repeat. (Well, that’s my brain, at least.) It’s exhausting. Mental decluttering means closing some of those tabs and giving your mind some room to breathe. You can achieve this through mindfulness, meditation, journaling, limiting your screen time, or just sitting with your thoughts for a few moments each day, without judgment. Also, consider your self-talk. If the way you talk to yourself is something you’d never in a million years say to someone you care about, then why say it to yourself? Try to recognize which thoughts serve you and which ones are just noise, and ditch the noise to make room for clarity and creativity.

The Spirit

Spiritual clutter consists of old beliefs, values, self-expectations, and societal pressures we carry around—sometimes without even realizing it. Ask yourself: What beliefs are guiding me? Do they still resonate with me, or are they just someone else’s ideas I picked up along the way? What expectations do I have of myself? Are they valid, or am I just trying to prove myself to someone from my past? Who’s voice is in my head? If it’s not yours, you might want to consider if what they have to say is still applicable to your life or if you can let it go. Think of this activity as an invitation to let go of what no longer aligns with your true self and explore what does.

This spring, dare to shed the stories you tell yourself and the roles you adhere to that no longer fit your life, and make room for a better, truer you.

Feelin’ Refreshed Yet?

I hope this spring cleaning guide has helped you to reconsider what you want in your life, both inside and out. And if not, that it at least helps you achieve a clean home!

I’d love to hear from you! What will you be letting go of this year? What will you be inviting in? Tell us in the comments.

I wish you the very best and a beautiful and renewed spring season!

Great Taste’s Kaluga Sturgeon Review & How to Store Caviar

Recently, I opted for a new kind of caviar I hadn’t tried before: the Kaluga Fusion Sturgeon from Great Taste

As someone who’s been around food in a professional sense for decades, I’ve tried a lot of caviar! I love caviar, though I do consider a special occasion type of treat. And I’ve had my share of great caviar and not-so-great caviar. This Kaluga Sturgeon is some very high quality caviar!

While I was excited to try it, I realized I had some questions about how to best store it. Of course, I wanted to make sure I got to enjoy it at peak quality. And I figured I couldn’t be the only one with questions about how long caviar lasts (both before and after opening it). And as it turns out, it’s a common caviar commundrum!

Kaluga Sturgeon Caviar on a Salmon blini spread

So today we’re diving into my thoughts on Great Taste’s black caviar, as well as how to keep this very perishable product the freshest it can be!

About Great Taste’s Kaluga Sturgeon Black Caviar

Great Taste Kaluga Sturgeon Black Caviar

Great Taste’s Kaluga Sturgeon is like the crème de la crème of the fish roe world.

Each bead of this black caviar comes with a noble golden shimmer, as if each little roe is dressed up in its Sunday best, just waiting to dazzle your taste buds. And not only does this Kaluga sturgeon delight have an amazing taste, but it’s also like a superhero for your health! We’re talking a powerhouse of essential nutrients, from calcium and magnesium to zinc and unsaturated fatty acids, all joining forces to give your body a general tonic boost.

Some of My Favorite Things About this Caviar

Black caviar blini spread

The Pros of this Incredible Caviar

The Texture: Imagine the most delicate, almost whisper-thin fabric. That’s how tender this caviar feels as it melts in your mouth. You can tell it’s high quality from the texture alone.

The Taste: There’s an interesting mix of lightly nutty and creamy notes, that are simultaneously bold and comforting. I really love it!

The Pairing: I paired this with some salmon, creme fraiche, and microgreens on a blini, and LOVED the combo. The caviar truly enhanced the flavors of the other ingredients but was also so distinct in its own way without overpowering any other flavors.

The Cons:

If I had to nitpick, the only downside (if you could even call it that) would be the comedy of errors that ensued when I tried to open the container. I couldn’t tell if it was a twist-top or a pop-top, and I tried EVERYTHING to open it. A silicone jar holder for traction. A bottle opener. Sheer brute force. It wasn’t budging. Eventually, I had to employ the help of my husband, who also went through a series of hilarious attempts until he finally just grabbed a small flathead screwdriver, stuck the edge between the lid and bottom tin and turned the edge to a vertical position (like you would a key) to separate them, and viola! Fresh caviar!

We ended up laughing about how easy it was to open after all that struggle. (So, heads up if you find yourself in the same predicament! Flat head like this:  under the lip of the lid, and then twist to this position: to pop the lid up!)

Now let’s get into how you would best store caviar to get the most out of the shelf life of this delicacy!

How Long Does Caviar Last?

Jaden holding a blini spread on a cutting board

So, how long does caviar last? If you’re fishin’ for a quick answer, here it is: unopened caviar can last in your fridge for up to 4-6 weeks, thanks to its pristine vacuum-sealed container. But once that seal is broken, that timeline drops dramatically, and you’ve only got about 2 to 3 days to enjoy it. Of course, it’s not always that cut and dry. There are many factors to keeping caviar fresh, so let’s talk about them.

Factors that Affect the Shelf Life of Caviar

Here are some factors that can affect the shelf life of your caviar:

  • Storage Temperature: Caviar should be kept at an ideal storage temperature between 28 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Your best bet to achieve this is to keep it in the coldest part of your refrigerator. The lower and further back in your fridge, the better. Never leave your caviar at room temperature for longer than 2 hours. Keeping caviar at too warm temps is an invite for microbes to come and spoil your party.
  • Air Exposure: Caviar’s worst enemy is air, and it can lead to faster spoilage. Keep your caviar in its vacuum-sealed, airtight container and don’t open it until just before you’re about to enjoy it.
  • Salt Content & Pasteurization: Malossol caviar means it contains little salt. This helps to preserve caviar but also means it won’t last as long as heavily salted roe. When properly pasteurized, some sealed caviar can last up to 6 months in the fridge. Pasteurization, however, exposes roe to high heat to kill off contaminants, which can also make it rubbery and compromise its delicate texture. This is why most caviar-lovers enjoy the unpasteurized variety.
  • Type of Caviar: From beluga caviar to salmon roe, each has its own diva demands in order to achieve optimal shelf life, and high-quality caviar tends to be more perishable.
  • Handling: The less you handle caviar, the better. Use clean utensils to avoid contaminating your precious pearls with food particles.

How to Tell When Your Caviar Has Gone Bad

Even the most luxurious delicacies have their expiration, and caviar is no exception. Here’s how you can tell if it’s time to bid adieu to your caviar:

  • Off Odor: Fresh caviar should smell like the ocean, briny and fresh. If it smells fishy or off, trust your nose, take a note from Frozen, and let it gooooooo.
  • Color Changes: Caviar comes in an array of colors, and it should maintain that color. If it turns dull or changes color, that’s a sure sign of spoilage.
  • Texture: Caviar should have a delicate texture, with each roe intact and firm. If the eggs become mushy or overly soft, throw it out.
  • Mold: Yes, even caviar can mold. Any visible signs of mold means the caviar has gone bad.

As always, when it doubt, throw it out!

Can You Freeze Caviar For Longer Storage?

To freeze or not to freeze your caviar? While freezing caviar can extend its expiration date into well over a year, not all caviar types play well with the cold. Freezing tends to compromise the quality of the caviar, especially premium sturgeon caviar.

If you consider yourself any kind of caviar connessoir, you’re probably looking to enjoy it at optimal quality and get the best flavor out of it, and if that’s the case, freezing your caviar is a huge no-no. (The exception to this includes firmer roes like Tobiko (flying fish) or Masago (capelin), because the eggs are hardier, with a texture that can withstand the freezing process without losing quality.)

So while you can freeze caviar, you probably shouldn’t. A better option is simply to keep your unopened container of caviar at the coldest part of your fridge.

Caviar FAQs

Ingredients for a blini spread

What is the best way to store unopened caviar?
The best way to store unopened caviar is in the coldest part of the fridge, ideally at the back of the bottom shelf or drawer. Make sure to keep the jar or tin unopened until you’re ready to indulge.

Can I use metal spoons with my caviar?
Metal spoons, especially when made of silver or stainless steel, can react with the delicate flavor of caviar, and make it taste metallic. Instead, opt for mother of pearl, bone, glass, or plastic spoons to preserve the flavor.

My caviar came in a metal container. Can’t that compromise the taste?

While some caviar does come in a tin container, manufacturers make sure they’re lined with a non-reactive material lining, so the caviar doesn’t actually touch the metal.

How long does caviar last once opened?
Once opened, you should enjoy your caviar within 2-3 days.

Can I freeze caviar?
While freezing caviar can extend its shelf life, it’s generally not recommended, especially if it’s of the sturgeon variety. Freezing can compromise your caviar’s delicate taste and texture. However, firmer roes like Tobiko or Masago can be frozen without significant quality loss.

What garnishes pair well with caviar?
Garnishes that complement the flavor of caviar without overpowering it include lemon wedges, sour cream, hard-boiled eggs, and blinis.

How can I tell if my caviar has gone bad?
Signs of spoilage in caviar include a bad odor, change in color, and a mushy texture. If the caviar tastes sour or unpleasant, discard it.

Are there different types of caviar?
Yes, there are LOTS of caviar types, including black caviar from sturgeon species like Beluga, Osetra, and Sevruga, and red caviar, primarily from salmon. Each type offers its own unique flavor. The ideal storage temperature can vary slightly between these types.

Life on the Ranch with My Circulon ScratchDefense Nonstick Stir Fry Wok

Hello, Steamy Fam!

As busy as I get with work, there’s one thing I can say, and that is: My life is never boring! That’s for sure!

In fact, today, I’m coming to you from a ranch. (Yes, you read that right!) My husband and I have been spending some time on a 200 acre ranch for our other businesses, and it has been about as different from Vegas city life as you might expect! We also decided to take the dog squad with us, and, let me tell you, they are living their best life. In fact, I think they assume we made the trip just for them.

circulon scratchdefense nonstick stirfry wok

We’re living that RV life on tribal land in the middle of nowhere, and there’s not much in terms of entertainment, except for what we make of it. At night, we put a white sheet against the wall of the RV and project Sons of Anarchy onto it. (We’re on season 7, and it’s SO GOOD. WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME?!) The closest grocery store is a half hour away. The closest Walmart is an hour way. And if we’re snowed in (which has been the case many times this past winter), there’s nowhere to go.

RF life on the ranch

One night, we found a family of owls living somewhere in the roof structure. I feel like they’re keeping watch over us. There’s also a family of coyotes over the riverbank, just several dozen yards away. They become active very at night. The little baby pups yip out in the dead of night and my dogs bark back. This goes on for several hours.

The nightly view on the ranch

But all in all, the contrast has been nice. Simple living suits us in an interesting way. It’s been great to get back in touch with nature and get away from the constant distractions of city-dwelling. Some days, I do miss my bed, but otherwise, I’m enjoying the fresh air and these AMAZING views. Of course, we’re also nowhere near any sort of restaurants or fast food stops, so home cooking is the only option, and that’s why my Circulon 13-Inch ScratchDefense Nonstick StirFry Wok has been a lifesaver!

Why I Love This Circulon 13-Inch ScratchDefense Nonstick Stir Fry Wok with Helper Handle

13-Inch ScratchDefense Nonstick StirFry with Helper Handle

As someone who’s been cooking Asian cuisine for many years, I’ve seen my share of woks! And I can confidently say this one stands out for a few reasons:

Truly NonStick & NonScratch: This Circulon A1 Series stir-fry pan is kinda like the superhero of woks. The ScratchDefense™ Technology is basically a suit of armor, and this is not your basic nonstick coating we’re talking about. You don’t ever have to worry about scratches or sticking with this pan. That’s not just something I’m saying. It’s literally Circulon’s promise when it comes to this wok! You can even use metal utensils with it, which is unheard of when it comes to woks.

It LASTS: Of the many woks I’ve owned, longevity can sometimes be an issue. I can be hard on my woks, and they get a LOT of use. You can usually differentiate the lower quality woks from the higher quality ones pretty early on. They simply just don’t stand the test of time. But this pan is in it for the long haul. In fact, in the world of nonstick pans, this one lasted 130 times longer than its competitors, and that’s probably because they threw everything they had at it during the design phase. They even went as far as to simulate over 200 years of daily use!

It’s Dishwasher Friendly: “Okay…” you’re thinking. “But what’s the catch? It’s gotta be hell to wash, right?” EHHH. WRONG! This wok is actually dishwasher safe! (Did you hear me when I said it’s UNSCRATCHABLE?) It’s got a triple-layer nonstick surface, so you can throw it in your dishwasher AND you can cook with less oil!

It’s Light and Easy To Handle: We all love a cast iron, but my arm gets super tired trying to use one some days. This pan is a great weight that I can work with for a long while. AND I don’t have to rely on just the regular handle when I have to toss ingredients. It comes with a grip on the other side, so I feel SO much more confident getting a good stir in!

Even Heating: Under that nonstick surface is an aluminum body, so it heats for quickly and evenly. It’s also got a stainless steel base, so it’s induction-suitable if that’s your vibe. If you’re someone who does a lot of stir fries, like me, this is a GREAT piece of cookware to add to your repertoire, and one you’ll feel good about investing in because of its long lifespan.

Loving my wok!

In Short…

Lucky in the snow

If I were stranded on a desert island, I can tell you that this Circulon pan is the one piece of cookware I would take with me. And I can say that, cuz some nights I’m stranded in a snowed-in RV in the middle of nowhere, and that’s not too far off.

I hope you take some time to get some peace and quiet as well, and make some magical moments of your own!

10 Things To Know About Steamy Kitchen

Can you believe that Steamy Kitchen is almost 2 decades old?

I think back and am amazed by what we’ve accomplished. I wouldn’t be where I am without the help of my wonderful team and, of course, YOU! This community has been the backbone of this endeavor, and I’m so grateful for you everyday.

To celebrate Steamy’s 19th year, I thought I’d give you a little background info on our journey. Here are…

10 Things To Know About Steamy Kitchen

1. The path to creating Steamy Kitchen was prompted by a moment of frustration.

Vegetable Egg Rolls Recipe

In 2005, while sitting in a restaurant called Bangkok Tokyo, I overheard a woman on the phone say, “I’m having sushi at the Chinese restaurant.” My spine stiffened. I glanced at the signage. Neither Bangkok nor Tokyo was in China.

I sat with the feeling, and after a few deep breaths, I realized being upset didn’t fix anything. If I wanted things to change, I had to change them myself. If I wanted people understand ethnic cooking, I had to teach them.

Though I had no cooking experience outside of my home kitchen, I walked into a local culinary school and asked if I could teach there. My “resume” was a platter of Mom’s recipes: wok fried rice and crispy egg rolls. I was hired on the spot.

2. Steamy Kitchen began as a personal way to store my mom’s recipes.

Me and mom at Fogo de Chao

Immediately following my new job, I raced home and called my mom to ask her for more of her family recipes, and she began dictating them to me over the phone. Eventually, I decided to start a blog to store them all in a blog, starting with easy Asian recipes.

3. The name Steamy Kitchen is an homage to my mom.

My mom and I

My mom, the bun-master!

Though my mother only knew Chinese when we first emigrated from Hong Kong, our neighbors taught her recipes like baked apple pie and slow-cooked pot roast. In return, she taught them how to make wok fried rice and crispy egg rolls, and it was through these interactions that she began to learn English.

After just a few years in the midwest, I eventually lost my native Cantonese tongue, but my mom and I never stopped communicating through food. Food quickly became our life-long love language.

Even to this day, she always has a steamy pot of homemade Chinese soup simmering on the stove.

4. I knew Steamy Kitchen was going to be a business from the beginning.

As soon as I started my blog, I knew I was going to build a business from it. At the time, nobody even knew what a blog was, but I was excited by the premise of breaking into a brand new industry because it meant I could create anything that I wanted to.

There were 2 major strategies that I employed:

The first was to be multi-talented. With no formal training, I taught myself the art of recipe-writing and food photography (including food styling, editing photos, and editing video), as well as how to master web development and online marketing. I knew that the more talent that I had, the more valuable I’d become, and within six months, I attracted the attention of a cookbook publisher and scored a sweet book deal—the recipes and photography fully created by me.

The second strategy was to be multi-platform. These days, it’s par for the course to utilize TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook for online marketing, but 19 years ago, these platforms didn’t exist. Multi-platform meant being equipped and experienced with live television, in-person events, radio and public speaking. I knew that if I got good at presenting on television, I could stand out and reel in more opportunities.

5. Steamy Kitchen got its first exposure deal in print.

Jaden in a Magazine

Early on in Steamy Kitchen’s journey, I reached out to the Tampa Tribune newspaper and asked if I could write a column for each of their issues, simply for the exposure. They obliged, and from this small endeavor, people began reaching out to me with new opportunities.

6. It wasn’t long before Steamy Kitchen was on TV.

I started taking Steamy to a lot of daytime TV networks. Whether I was filming segments in New York, attending conferences in Chicago, or meeting companies and sponsors in between, it seemed I was always flying somewhere. Steamy Kitchen has made its way to the Today Show, CBS Early Show, The List, WFLA’s Daytime, ABC’s Recipe Rehab and so much more. SK was also featured on Martha Stewart Living Radio, Oprah.com, and Parents Magazine, just to name a few.

7. Steamy has 2 cookbooks!

I had the wonderful privilege of authoring 2 cookbooks along the way: The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook and Steamy Kitchen’s Healthy Asian Favorites.

8. Steamy Kitchen also has 2 mottos.

The first is Magical Moments

Magical moments are essentially small acts of gratitude, and a way to infuse “magic” and joy into the small moments of our own lives and the lives of others. It could be a scribbled note of encouragement passed onto a friend, a heartfelt compliment with a genuine smile to a stranger, or a surprise gift for my sons. I wake up each morning asking myself what kind of Magical Moments could I create that day.

The second is more inwardly focused: Simple Pleasures, Deeply Felt.

This to me means slowing down and noticing the simple things. Everything is so fast-paced, sometimes people forget to just slow down! I have this philosophy tattooed on my arm to remind myself each day to appreciate the simple pleasures. It’s incredibly intentional. Really take in each moment.

9. Our focuses include sensual cooking, mindful eating, and reducing food waste.

Buddha Bowls

Sensual cooking is all about bringing intention into the way we prepare food and a connection to the simplicity of ingredients. Mindful eating implores us to slow down and bring our full awareness to each and every meal.

When it comes to reducing food waste, we employ 2 methods:

Reverse Meal Plan, which is all about shopping from your kitchen first and using up what you have, which saves you time and money, and Love Your Leftovers, which is an assortment of recipes that will completely reinvent your leftover meals into new meals.

Along with these, we also love to talk about Buddha Bowls, which provides you an easy formula to create delicious, healthy meals.

10. SteamyKitchen.com is now one of the longest running and largest food blogs in the world!

Boasting 5 million page views and over 300,000 unique users per month, as well as over 50 million unique lifetime users and 400 million lifetime page views, Steamy Kitchen has been around since the dawn of food blogging, and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Now You Know!

We hope you enjoyed this list of things to know about Steamy Kitchen and that you learned something new! Here’s to you, and to another decade of fun recipes and magical moments!
