Baking Brownies with Benissimo’s Organic Avocado Oil

There are literally hundreds of different ways to make brownies, and a number of fats you can add to the mix, like olive oil, vegetable oil, and melted butter. But there’s one surprising fat that takes this sweet treat from good to absolutely decadent, and that’s avocado oil. Avocado? In pastries? I know. It might sound strange, but it works better than you would ever imagine!

Recently, we reviewed 6 of Benissimo’s Oils, including their delightful Organic Avocado Oil, and we truly put it to the test by using it to bake some killer brownies.

Benissimo Avocado Oil

Why Bake with Avocado Oil?

Why would you use avocado oil for brownies and other pastries? Here are just a few reasons:

  • Olive oil is a great healthy fat, but has a potent flavor that can overpower many recipes. Avocado oil is a neutral oil that takes on the flavor profile of whatever you’re mixing it with, so you don’t have to worry about it overpowering your desserts with the taste of avocados.
  • Due to the fact that it comes from the fleshy part of the avocado, rather than the seed, avocado oil boasts a high smoke point—a higher smoke point, in fact, than coconut oil, olive oil, peanut oil, and canola oil. This helps it keep oven-baked food items from developing a smoky flavor. (Cuz no one wants a mesquite pastry.)
  • Avocado oil adds moisture to your baked goods, which makes them extra moist with a buttery richness that’s sure to get you rave reviews from your friends and family.
  • It’s great for replacing other oils and butters in recipes with a 1:1 ratio.

The Health Benefits of Benissimo Organic Avocado Oil

Benissimo’s Organic Avocado Oil is made with 100% pure avocado oil and is rich in healthy fats. Here are some other great things about this oil.

  •  Avocado oil is also rich in antioxidants such as oleic acids, a healthy fat known to lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol.
  • The nutritional value of avocado oil contains these vitamins:
    • E, which is good for skin and eye health
    • A, which benefits your immune system, growth, and ensures your organs function properly
    • D, which you need to absorb calcium and keep your bones strong
    • and K, which aids in blood clotting and the building of bones.
  • 70% of the fat in avocado oil is monounsaturated, which makes it healthier than saturated fat-rich foods.
  • It’s packed with polyphenols, antioxidants that remove the by-products of oxidative stress in the brain and body.
  • It contains carotenoids like lutein, which is great for the brain and has been shown to reduce age-related macular degeneration.
  • Avocado oil is healthier than canola oil, which is highly processed and less nutrient dense.

Making Avocado Oil Brownies with Benissimo’s Organic Avocado Oil

We created some deliciously moist and nutty brownies with just a few simple ingredients! Normally, you would mix together all the dry ingredients and wet ingredients in a separate bowl and then combine. But we did things a little differently, and it turned out amazing! (Forget store-bought brownie mix. There’s nothing better or more simple than homemade gooey brownies.)

We started by throwing some of Benissimo’s Organic Avocado oil in a large mixing bowl with some sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Then mixed it up.

Next, we mixed in some eggs, and then added all-purpose flour and freshly crushed walnuts, and mixed some more.

Then we took the brownie batter and added it into a parchment paper-lined baking dish, making sure to spread it evenly over the whole dish. Here’s where we added the secret ingredient: salt! There’s just something about salt that takes the chocolate flavor to the next level. (Even better if you add a pinch of flaky sea salt!)

We popped that into the oven at 325°F for 30 to 35 minutes. The best part of this process was that it made my whole house smell like brownies.

One we pulled the dish out of the oven, we tested that they were done by sticking a toothpick in the center of the brownies, and then let them rest to room temperature. (Resisting the temptation of getting your chocolate fix until they’ve cooled is TRULY the hardest part of making brownies.)

Finally, it was time to try them! Just look at that moist, fudgy texture!

Looking to Make Your Own Fudgy Brownies?

The moisture that Benissimo’s Organic Avocado Oil brought to these traditional brownies was unmatched. This oil is truly a baking-enthusiast’s dream. The brownies ended up being a true crowd-pleaser and didn’t last long at my house! We highly recommend trying Benissimo’s high-quality Organic Avocado Oil for yourself! You can find your own bottle on their website.

If you do end up trying it, we’d love to hear your take, especially if you end up adding it to another baked delight we haven’t tried. Cake? Cookies? Cupcakes? Something entirely different? (My mouth is watering at the options.) Leave us a comment letting us know how they turned out. We love hearing from you!

The Best Starbucks Vanilla Coffee Drink for You

Are you a vanilla fiend looking for the best vanilla drink at Starbucks? It doesn’t matter if you’re a casual coffee drinker or a Starbucks aficionado, finding the right vanilla coffee for yourself can be a bit intimidating, especially with so many options.

Don’t worry, vanilla coffee lover! That’s why we created this comprehensive guide to match you with your perfect vanilla delight based on your preferences. Whether you want to keep it low-cal or just need a massive pick-me-up, there’s a Starbucks vanilla drink for everyone. Let’s find your next favorite cup of joe, shall we?

The Starbucks Vanilla Drink Lineup

If You’re Looking for a Lower Calorie Option…

Iced Blonde Vanilla Latte – Grande: 190 calories, 28 grams sugar, 4 grams fat, and 170mg of caffeine.

Iced Blonde Vanilla Latte

Photo: Starbucks

This is kind of like the lighter (but still delicious) cousin to your classic iced latte. It features Starbucks® Blonde Espresso, a touch of vanilla syrup, and cold milk over ice cubes, AND… it’s only 190 calories, which is perfect for those who are watching their waistline. Lucky for those of you who also need some energy, low-cal does not necessarily mean low caffeine, as this one comes in at 170mg.

When Want Something Warm and Comforting…

Blonde Vanilla Latte – Grande: 250 calories, 35g sugar, 6g fat, and 170mg of caffeine.

Blonde Vanilla Latte

If you like your coffee beverages warm and comforting, the regular (non-iced) Blonde Vanilla Latte is what you’re looking for. This drink is created with a combination of extra-smooth Starbucks® Blonde Espresso, steamed milk, and vanilla syrup. Its light, velvety taste is great for those who enjoy the milder flavors of a medium roast coffee bean. It does have more calories than the iced version (250 calories to be exact), but it’s a lovely treat during the cooler months when you’re looking for something to make you feel cozy from in the inside out.

For the Caffeine Connoisseur…

Vanilla Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew – Grande: 70 calories, 4g sugar, 5g fat, and 265mg of caffeine.

Vanilla Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew

Do you prefer your caffeine fix super smooth and velvety? If so, this one is your match. Starbucks’ Nitro Cold Brew is served cold straight from the tap and topped with house-made vanilla sweet cream. It’s also got a cascading, creamy texture, but don’t let it fool you. This one’s not for the faint of heart! It packs a serious 265mg caffeine punch. And yet, it’s only 70 calories, so if you’re calorie-conscious and looking to be absolutely amped, this is the one for you.

If You Love a Rich, Indulgent Flavor…

Caffè Vanilla Frappuccino Blended Beverage – Grande: 250 calories, 33g sugar, 7g fat, and 150mg of caffeine.

Caffè Vanilla Frappuccino Blended Beverage

If you’re the kind of person who prefers their coffee taste like a decadent dessert-like treat, opt for this beautiful blend of Frappuccino® roast coffee, vanilla bean powder, and milk. Blended with ice and topped with whipped cream, this thing is pure joy, but as expected with more indulgent treats, this iced coffee contains 410 calories and 63 grams of sugar. We all need a little treat sometimes! So if you enjoy a sweet vanilla flavor that makes you feel like you’re having ice cream in your coffee, you and this coffee are a match made in heaven.

If You Prefer a Smooth, Creamy Experience…

Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew – Grande: 110 calories, 14g sugar, 5g fat, and 185mg of caffeine.

Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew

This Starbucks’ Cold Brew Coffee is slow-steeped with an addition of vanilla sweet cream, and it’s SUPER smooth! However, you might be delighted to find that it doesn’t overdo it on the sweetness. Perfect for when you need a refreshing, subtly sweet coffee during the summer months.

Starbucks Secret Menu Vanilla Delights

You won’t find these on the menu, but they’re worth trying nonetheless!

When You’re Craving Something a Little Different…

Iced Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Latte

Iced Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Latte

Photo: Starbucks

This tropical drink is a unique spin on the classic vanilla iced latte with just a dash of coconut milk and real vanilla bean powder. Because it’s shaken with ice and topped with Starbucks’ signature espresso, it gives you a super flavorful rich and nutty flavor profile, but with a lighter feel. If you’re a fan of non-dairy milk options and are looking for a drink that’s not too heavy on the dairy or sugar, then this is your go-to.

However, this delicious drink is seasonal, and its availability varies at different locations, but we’re going to tell you how to order it, no matter the season.

To order, say: “I’d like a grande iced upside down blonde latte with coconut milk and vanilla bean powder. Shaken, please!”

If You Love TikTok Trends…

Pink Drink w/ Heavy Cream

This Tiktok sensation takes the regular Pink Drink, with a flavor profile that includes passion fruit and creamy coconut milk, and mixes it up by swapping the coconut milk out for heavy cream. But that’s not all! You’ll also add in some vanilla bean powder, then top it all off with whipped cream. It’s creamy and fruity and perfect for those who enjoy having a dessert in your cup of iced coffee.

To order, say: “Can I get a grande Pink Drink with heavy cream instead of coconut milk, 2 scoops of vanilla bean powder, and whipped cream on top?”

If You’re a Fan of Sweet and Spicy…

Iced Vanilla Chai Latte

Looking for a blend of sweet vanilla and spicy chai? This drink is your perfect match! It mingles together the warm spices of black tea and the smoothness of vanilla, and it’s the best way to enjoy chai if you’re a fan of clove, cinnamon, and vanilla.

To order, say: “A grande Iced Chai Latte with vanilla, please.”

If You Like Quick, Intense Coffee Shots…

The Undertow Espresso

Looking for a hidden gem that’ll having you movin’ and groovin’ in record time? This pick-me-up happens in layers: a bottom layer of vanilla syrup, two ounces of Half & Half, and two shots of espresso on top. Perfect for those who need something quick and easy and don’t have time to sit there and sip for the next hour. It’s a fun, unique drink in a short cup that’s meant to be enjoyed quickly.

To order, say: “In a short cup, can I get 2 pumps vanilla, then 2 ounces of Half & Half, with 2 shots of espresso on top?”

If You Love Sweet and Nutty Flavors…

French Vanilla Latte

Looking to combine the smooth, sweet flavors of a Blonde Vanilla Latte with something a little more nutty in your daily cup of joe? Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

To order, just say: “A grande Blonde Vanilla Latte with 2 pumps of hazelnut.”

Time to Go Vanilla Crazy!

By now, you should be paired up with at least one vanilla Starbucks beverage, and hopefully have found your perfect match!

What is a Buddha Bowl? How to Build the Perfect Bowl

What Is a Buddha Bowl?

Buddha Bowl recipes help you repurpose leftovers and use every last bit of produce in your fridge with a simple formula that builds a well-rounded, delicious, and nutritious meal. These colorful and versatile one-bowl meals are not only a great way to reinvent boring leftovers, but they also help to reduce food waste and save you money in the process. What’s more—they incorporate a myriad of whole foods and are fairly simple to whip up, also saving you time and effort.

Let’s take a deep dive into the philosophy behind these beautiful meals and talk about how you can create your own deliciously healthy Buddha Bowl.

Buddha Bowl at the table

The Origin of Buddha Bowls

Despite the often-used imagery of those chubby Buddha statues, the Buddha was quite thin. In fact, Buddhist monks have been eating a specific way for thousands of years, with more regard to when they eat, rather than what they eat. The Buddha himself at only at specific times during the day, a practice very similar to what we know of as intermittent fasting. He would also walk the villages with a bowl, which locals would fill with whatever food they could spare. Whatever was placed in his bowl was what he ate. Thus began the practice of eating a one-bowl meal that contained a variety of colorful ingredients.

all the fixings for this pineapple chicken buddha bowl

Nourish, Power, Hippie, Buddha—What’s the Difference?

There are so many types of bowls these days, it’s hard to keep up sometimes! Here’s a rundown of each bowl, and how they contrast with what we know today as the modern Buddha Bowl.

Nourish Bowls focus on being nutrient dense. That’s why they’re generally packed with a variety of healthy ingredients that provide the body a ton of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients. They often consist of fresh vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. The goal of Nourish Bowls is to fill you up while simultaneously fueling your body with essential nutrients.

Power Bowls are designed specifically to boost energy and support an active lifestyle. Many contain high-protein ingredients to help build muscle and shorten workout recovery time, which makes them very popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts. When you think of Power Bowls, your first thought might be those Acai Bowl shops that have seemed to pop up everywhere, and yes, those are considered a form of Power Bowl. However, these shops tend to offer much more indulgent and generally calorically-heavy (and wildly expensive!) Power Bowls filled with high-sugar fruits and toppings like chocolate chips and almond butter.

Hippie Bowls are usually plant-based and focus mainly on whole, unprocessed ingredients rather than animal proteins. They often include a variety of colorful vegetables, and proteins in the form of legumes, nuts, and seeds. The general idea of Hippie Bowls is to create a healthy meal that’s also environmentally sustainable, one that follows a more natural, holistic lifestyle.

Grain Bowls are very similar to Buddha Bowls (and are often just another name for Buddha Bowls), but they focus on whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, or farro instead of all grains. Like Buddha Bowls, a Grain Bowl would also include a mix of veggies and protein, and are usually topped with a yummy dressing or sauce. These bowls are highly versatile and customizable to fit an array of dietary preferences and tastes.

Macro Bowls (short for macrobiotic) are all about following the macrobiotic diet, which includes a balance of whole grains, vegetables, beans, and fermented foods that are believed to promote health and longevity. The macrobiotic diet also focuses on eating seasonal and local foods, and like the Hippie Bowl, avoiding processed foods.

You can see how a lot of these bowls contain similar ingredients, and that the biggest difference between them is their intent. That’s what we love so much about Buddha Bowls. They integrate many elements of these bowls into one to create a comprehensive and well-rounded meal.

Buddha Bowls are kind of a hybrid of Nourish Bowls, Grain Bowls, and Hippie Bowls. They feature a variety of raw and cooked veggies, grains, a lean protein, and are topped off with a yummy dressing and a crunchy addition for texture. Buddha Bowls are probably known best for their colorful and vibrant appearance. They can be vegan or vegetarian by focusing on plant-based proteins, pescatarian, or basic for regular ol’ omnivores.

How to Build Your Own Buddha Bowl

Creating your own Buddha Bowl is fun and easy, and the combinations are endless. Here’s the formula for crafting the perfect bowl:

  1. Pick Your Base: Start with a base of leafy greens or grains like rice, quinoa, or noodles.
  2. Add Colorful Veggies: Use fresh veggies or grab some scraps from your crisper drawer. They can be raw or cooked, depending on your preference. Some good options are bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, purple cabbage, and brussels sprouts.
  3. Add a Lean Protein: Choose a plant-based protein like black beans or tofu, or opt for an animal protein like grilled chicken, shrimp, or shredded pork.
  4. Add a Flavorful Sauce: The sauce is what ties it all together. You can choose a store-bought sauce or dressing, but homemade pesto, peanut sauce or tahini sauce are all super easy to whip up! If that’s too much, you can always opt for a super simple dressing of soy sauce and sesame oil.
  5. Finish it Off with a Crunchy Topping: Top your bowl with seeds, nuts, or crispy onions for a little bit of texture and crunch!

Are Buddha Bowls Healthy?

The healthiness of a Buddha Bowl truly depends on what you choose to throw in it. If health is the goal, then we recommend focusing on nutrient-dense foods like fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. This combo of ingredients is inspired by East Asian diets, which are known for lowering inflammation. Likewise, ensuring your sauce isn’t chock full of sugar or preservatives is always a good call.

Tips for Making the Perfect Buddha Bowl

  • Balance Out Your Flavors and Textures: The best Buddha Bowls have a mix of flavors (the 5 S’s: sweet, salty, savory, sour or tangy, and spicy) and textures (crunchy, creamy, chewy). The more you can vary these flavors and textures, the better your bowl will be. Here’s a tip: Try adding sweet potatoes for a touch of sweetness or red onions for a bit of zing.
  • Experiment with Dressings: A lot of the ingredients used in Buddha Bowls absorb flavor well, like tofu, certain veggies, and even plain chicken. So your dressing (and seasonings, if you so choose) can change the entire vibe of the bowl! Some options you might choose from include balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, or a simple olive oil and soy sauce mix.
  • Incorporate Seasonal Produce: Using in-season veggies is not only cheaper, but more flavorful, and it allows you to support local farmers.
  • Use Leftovers Creatively: Buddha Bowls are perfect opportunity to use up leftovers, and not just proteins or about-to-turn veggies, but rice and noodles as well! Use what you got and throw them right in your bowl.

Buddha Bowls Around the World

Buddha Bowls are so versatile you can even customize them based on culture. Here are a few ways to achieve that:

  • Mexican Buddha Bowl: Use a base of brown or Spanish rice. Throw in some black beans, bell peppers, and corn. Top with avocado, lime juice, and a sprinkle of chili powder for a southwestern twist. Want to take it to the next level? Make your bowl a taco shell bowl!
  • Mediterranean Bowl: Start with a base of quinoa or couscous. Add in some cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and feta cheese. Finish it off with a drizzle of olive oil and lemon juice.
  • Asian-Inspired Bowl: Use white rice or rice noodles as your base. Add in some raw veggies like carrots, purple cabbage, and edamame, and shrimp as a lean protein. Top with a drizzle of sesame oil and soy sauce.

What to Do with Leftover Coffee & Coffee Grounds

Are you a fellow coffee aficionado? If so, you’ve probably found yourself staring at the pot on occasion, wondering if your leftover brew is destined for anything besides the sink. You’re not alone. That last cup of coffee, sitting forlornly, doesn’t have to go to waste. In fact, extra coffee could be the start of something delicious… or downright genius! There are so many creative ways to reuse coffee. Here are some ideas on how to turn that “oops, brewed too much” mistake into a sustainable “a-ha!” moment.

Cooking and Baking

Coffee Up Your Chocolate Pastries

Chocolate and coffee cupcakes

We’re diving into the world of desserts first because, well… why not?

Love chocolate cake or devil’s food? Did you know that just a little bit of strong coffee can take these classics from yum to can’t stop, won’t stop levels of delicious? Next time you’re whisking and folding all that chocolatey goodness, add a splash of your leftover brew. Not only will it add a little more moisture to your baked goods, but it will amplify the delicious chocolate taste of your favorite desserts. Soon, that “little too much coffee” will become the best kitchen mistake you’ve ever made.

In fact, here are 2 Steamy desserts you can make with coffee grounds:

The Gravy Train to Coffee Town

Ever heard of red-eye gravy? It’s a diner classic and a Southern favorite. Imagine a coffee-infused gravy that’s bold and tangy. One that you can drizzle over your favorite dishes like cooked steak, fried potatoes, buttermilk biscuits, or you can even use it as a salad dressing. And it only takes 2 elements: the drippings of pan-fried country ham and black coffee. Jocelyn of Grandbaby Cakes likes to make hers with butter and beef broth. You can check her recipe out here!

Slow Cooking with Coffee?

For those of you who love your slow cooker as much as I do, let’s talk about transforming tough cuts of meat with coffee! Did you know that a dash of cold coffee in your slow cooker can do wonders for meats? Yup! A cup of joe can break down the meat and make it super tender, while also infusing it with a savory, rich flavor. This is an especially great trick for roast beef!

Beverage Magic & Creamy Dreams

Coffee Ice Cream & Popsicles

Vietnamese Coffee ice cream

Ever tried coffee ice cream made from yesterday’s pot? If not, you GOTTA try it! For coffee ice cream, you take heavy cream, whisk together heavy cream and sugar ’til frothy, then whisk in milk, vanilla extract and coffee, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour, then run through an ice cream maker. Looking for an even easier sweet treat? Sweeten your leftover coffee, add in a little milk, pour into popsicle mold and freeze! Then enjoy later for a frosty treat that will also pep you up!

In fact, here’s an incredibly decadent Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream Recipe from our own Steamy archives.

Coffee Ice Cubes

Few things are more tragic than an iced coffee that’s diluted by melted ice. What if you could keep you coffee cold, without ever having to worry about it getting watered down? The secret? Coffee ice cubes! One of the easiest ways to keep your iced coffee robust and full-flavored throughout the course of your sipping is just to pour your extra brew into ice cube trays, let it freeze, then use as ice cubes in your cold brew. Your iced coffee will thank you.

A Morning Coffee Smoothie

Eve thought about blending brewed coffee into your morning smoothie for a buzz with benefits? You totally can! In fact, Ambitious Kitchen has an amazing recipe for your remaining coffee! Find her Good Morning Coffee Lover’s Smoothie here!

What About Leftover Coffee Grounds?

It’s not just your leftover brewed coffee that has a wealth of great uses. Your used (or even unused) coffee grounds can be used for lots of things!

Your Secret Garden Ingredient

 Coffee grounds in my plants

Who would have thought that your daily morning ritual could green up your garden? Coffee’s tannins are the compounds that give your morning brew its bitter flavors, and they are a great natural fertilizer. Enrich the soil of acid-loving plants by sprinkling in some used coffee grounds. You can also keep pests at bay with leftover grounds. Deter slugs, snails, and ants without harsh chemicals by sprinkling in some coffee in your dirt.

Grounds for Beauty

Did you know that a handful of coffee grounds makes an excellent natural exfoliant? Goodbye, dead skin. Hello, radiant glow! Use them on their own or another great idea is to combine coffee grounds with coconut oil for a natural, gentle exfoliant that leaves your skin glowing.

For a deep, natural shine, massage damp coffee grounds into your hair before shampooing. Coffee grounds can help remove product buildup and enhance your hair’s natural beauty. Some people also like to blend coffee grounds into homemade hair dyes to add a natural depth to their mane.

Home Hacks with the Help of Coffee Grounds

Used coffee grounds as a deodorizer? Absolutely. They’re great at keeping shoe odors at bay. Just fill some tea bags or small fabric bags with coffee grounds and place them in shoes overnight. Got fridge odors? Fill a bowl with dry coffee grounds and place it in your refrigerator or any area that needs a little freshness. And you can even hide scuff in wood furniture with coffee grounds! Make a thick paste using coffee grounds and water or cooking oil and rub it into damaged areas, and allow it to sit for 15 minutes, then wipe away. It’s a low-cost, secret weapon for a fresher, cleaner home.

Culinary Creations

Looking to enhance the flavors of your meat? Mix coffee grounds with spices and rub them onto meats for an added depth of flavor and to tenderize tough cuts. A dash of coffee grounds mixed with a bit of salt, brown sugar, and your favorite spices also brings a unique twist to barbecued proteins. You can even use them in dressings and marinades. Blend coffee grounds with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, or soy sauce to create condiments that pack a punch.

Crafts and More

Want to make some homemade candles? Stir coffee grounds into melted wax, then add a wick and pour into a mold and viola! You have beautiful candles that give off a subtle coffee aroma as they burn. AND a natural room deodorizer!

Did you know you can also use coffee grounds to make inks and dyes? Just boil your coffee grounds in water to create a natural dye for fabrics or a homemade ink for artistic projects. It’s an eco-friendly and easy way to achieve a vintage or sepia-toned look. Dip dye skirts, shirts, or sweaters for a beautiful hombre vibe!
