Chocolate Covered Pretzels Recipe

My favorite flavor combination of all time is salty and sweet. I think that sea salt flavored dessert products are the best thing invented since the wheel. What’s my ultimate salty-sweet snack? By far it is chocolate covered pretzels.

I absolutely love the saltiness of the pretzels and the sweetness of the chocolate. For a less sweet option you can use a darker chocolate such as 85%. It still has a subtle sweet taste to it, but not as sweet as white or milk chocolate.

These elaborate looking snacks are actually quick to make and you can even make them in advance. All you have to do is store them in an airtight container at room temperature and they will last for up to 3 weeks. You should always have some on hand for a quick lunch-box assembly or for the arrival of unexpected guests.

Another aspect of this recipe that I love, is its flexibility. You can use different types of chocolate as well as different toppings such as nuts, cookies, candied orange peel, or sprinkles. For a more advanced decorating technique you can pipe a different melted chocolate over your covered pretzels. White chocolate and dark chocolate creates a beautiful contrast.

This snack is kid-friendly and can be a great activity to keep your kids busy over the holidays. Let their creativity reign by providing them with many different decorating options. It will keep them busy for quite a while. You can also make it for their birthday parties or play-dates. Both the kids and adults will love these.

How To Make Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Melt the chocolate over a double boiler or in the microwave. Make sure your chocolate doesn’t become too hot and seizes.

Dip each pretzel into the melted chocolate and place on a lined baking sheet. Transfer the sheet to the fridge so the chocolate can set.

If you want to decorate your pretzels with toppings, add these before you transfer the covered pretzels to the fridge. If you want to drizzle more chocolate over the pretzels, you can do so after the chocolate has hardened.

Serve these chocolate covered pretzels at any occasion, but make enough as they will go quickly.

A beautiful, creative and kid-friendly snack that is both easy and quick to make. These chocolate covered pretzels are a must-have snack recipe!

    Ingredients

    • 1 bag of salted pretzels or 72 pretzel twists

    • 6 ounces chocolate disks, any type

    • Garnishes options include nuts or cookies

    Directions

    • Start by melting your chocolate in a heat-proof bowl. There are two ways to do this step. The first is to place your chocolate in the microwave and stir every 30 seconds until your chocolate is completely melted. The second way is to melt your chocolate over a double boiler while stirring constantly. Either way works, just make sure that your chocolate doesn’t become too hot and seizes. If you are using different types of chocolate such as white chocolate and dark chocolate, melt them in separate bowls.
    • Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. For this recipe, either work as there is no baking involved.
    • Dip the pretzels in the chocolate and place them on the baking sheet in a single layer. You can use any type of chocolate to cover the pretzels or use a combination of them. If you want to add toppings, do so now. Move the baking sheet to the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.
    • To decorate your pretzels, there are a ton of options. My favorite is to place the rest of the melted chocolate into a piping bag and after the chocolate pretzels have hardened, to drizzle more chocolate over them. Using white and dark chocolate on top of each other creates an amazing contrast. You can also sprinkle a variety of garnished on top while your chocolate is still wet.
    • Serve these as a snack at any occasion and get ready for tons of compliments.

    Notes

    • To make this recipe dairy-free, use allergen-free chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate.
    • These pretzels can last for 2-3 weeks in an airtight container at room temperature. If it is too hot and the chocolate starts to melt, store them in the refrigerator. I do not recommend freezing these pretzels as they will become stale.

    Tips & Tricks

    • A great garnish option is to chop nuts such as walnuts, pistachio or pecan nuts. Crushed cookies also make for a great topping. Other ideas to use are desiccated coconut, candied orange peel or sprinkle mixes. You can use any topping to fit the theme of your occasion.
    • A creative garnish option is to crush candy canes and use them as garnish for holiday-themed pretzels.
    • To flavor your pretzels, add a few drops of extract to the melted chocolate before dipping your pretzels.
    • You can color your pretzels by placing the liquid or gel food colorant bottle into a ziplock bag. Dip the bags into warm water to heat the food coloring so it becomes the same temperature as the melted white chocolate. Combine a few drops of warm food coloring with ½ teaspoon oil per color. Quickly mix the equally warm melted white chocolate and food coloring to prevent the chocolate from seizing.

    Conclusion

They are crunchy, salty and sweet – what could be a better treat? This recipe is the perfect all-rounder and will please any guest; big or small.

It is a great activity to keep your kids busy and will stimulate their creativity. You can do these at birthday parties or play-dates.

If you love gatherings but never get to all the preparations, do yourself a favor and make these pretzels to save you some time. They can be decorated according to the theme and although they look like they take forever to make, they don’t. Your guests will be swooning over these fun, appetizing snacks.
