If you have ever been to Disneyland, Disney World or the Dole plantation, you have probably had Dole whip. Since it was released in 1986, it became one of their most popular and iconic desserts. The best way I can describe it is an explosion of juicy pineapple soft-serve that has an incredible mouth-feel. Every bite is unbelievably smooth, creamy and refreshing. Drooling yet?
Sure, the rides and attractions at Disneyland were amazing, but I cannot get all the wonderful food and drink out of my head. When I was there it was a scorching 100 degrees Fahrenheit which is way out of my comfort zone.
But then, we came across the Tiki Juice bar just outside the Enchanted Tiki Room, and everyone immediately recommended Dole Whip as a refresher and they were not wrong. I have only had it once in my life, but it was so memorable, that I just had to re-create my own version of it at home.
Imagine my surprise when I found that Disney literally just released the recipe on the Disney App. And I must say, I was expecting a lot more ingredients, but after hours of research it truly does seem like this could be the top-secret recipe.
All you need is frozen pineapple, pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream! Their original recipe was (to my surprise) dairy-free, so if you want to use vegan or non-dairy ice cream, feel free.
The recipe is very simple; blend all of the ingredients together and you are done! There are also a number of substitutes for the pineapple flavor you can try. You can have basic substitutes such as banana or strawberry, or more inventive ones such as a mango-coconut combination.
This Dole Whip recipe does taste exactly like what we had and so many wonderful memories came flooding back.
It is a great treat for those hot summer days or just when you feel like having a vacation in your backyard.
How To Make Disney Dole Whip
Start defrosting the pineapple chunks for 15-20 minutes. They should still be semi-frozen.
Place all of the ingredients in a food processor and blend until completely smooth. Scrape the sides so all the chunks blend evenly.
As easy as that! Delicious soft-serve in seconds!
Tips & Tricks
- The absolute best part of this recipe is that you can actually use any fruit you want. The process stays the same, the quantities stay the same, it is just the flavor that changes. You can even use a combination of different fruits to create your own flavors.
- To make berry-flavored Dole Whip, blend a variety of berries and berry juice together. You can also make a tropical-flavored soft serve by blending mango, pineapple and kiwi together with pineapple juice or a tropical fruit juice.
- This recipe is extremely cost-effective as you can use seasonal and local produce. You don’t have to source out-of-season fruits that always cost an arm and a leg.
- For my more daring foodie friends out there, you can try to use different ice creams. The safe substitutes would be, for example, strawberry ice cream in a berry-flavored Dole Whip or banana ice cream for banana-flavored Dole Whip. However, a more daring substitute would be using lemon or sea salt flavored ice cream. You can experiment a lot and you will definitely find something out of this world!
- You can turn this into a fun kid’s activity by letting them add their own toppings. Fun toppings include crushed cookies, chocolate chips, sprinkles, cut fruits and a variety of dessert sauces.
Conclusion
As you have gathered, this recipe is incredibly versatile. Make any flavor you like or stick to the traditional for a truly authentic experience. It doesn’t take up your whole day to make and everyone needs some child-like joy every now and then.
If you want even less work, you can make an ice cream version of this Dole Whip recipe by freezing the mixture in a container. Simply remove, scoop and enjoy!
It is a budget-friendly recipe and you probably already have enough ingredients in your home to make your own version of it.
Get the kids involved and have a movie day to truly make your home “the happiest place on earth.”
