How to Make Watermelon Margarita

This margarita recipe requires only three ingredients, watermelon, lime, and tequila, and two optional, ice and salt.

Watermelon – you need a fresh and juicy watermelon that’s as sweet as possible. There’s no added sugar in this recipe, so the sweeter and redder the watermelon, the better.

Tequila – use silver tequila for best taste.

Limes – you need freshly squeezed lime juice and lime wedges for garnish.

Ice – for serving on the rocks or blending up nicely

Salt – for the salted rim.

You can either serve your watermelon margarita on the rocks, or frozen.

If you decide to make a nice, frozen drink for your friends, cut the watermelon and freeze it until completely frozen, or for 6 hours. The frozen watermelon will act like ice, making your drink thicker than usual.

Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until nice and smooth. That’s how you make frozen watermelon margarita.

Now, if you don’t want to use frozen watermelon for your margarita, use fresh watermelon in the blender and serve it over ice.

Both ways of preparation create an equally delicious and refreshing drink, with the only difference in the texture of the margarita. The one where you blend frozen watermelon is thicker than the other.

Making the salted rim that’s characteristic for margaritas is very simple. First, you need to rub the wet part of a lime wedge against the rim of your glass and then dip the glass upside down in the plate with salt, slowly pressing down until all sides are covered. It’s as simple as that.

If you use fresh watermelon like this recipe does, you’ll need not more than 15 minutes to prepare this delicious margarita.

This drink is made from wholesome ingredients with no added sugar, so don’t expect a headache even if you drink a few too many.

The amount of the ingredients down below yields two watermelon margaritas, so feel free to increase it if you expect guests or are in the mood for more drinks.

Here’s everything you need to know to make watermelon margarita in your home and make your friends and family happy. Expect them to ask for more, so you better make a bigger batch.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ¼ cups fresh watermelon juice (one small watermelon usually yields three to five cups of juice)

    • 5 tablespoons silver tequila (1 ½ ounces, you can use any silver tequila)

    • 1 ½ tablespoons lime juice

    • Sea salt (to make the salted rim)

    • Ice

    Directions

    • This recipe uses fresh watermelon. Cube it and remove the seeds, or not, and put the cubes in a large blender. Blend until you get 1 ¼ cups of fresh watermelon juice. You can cube and blend an entire watermelon, which will produce around 700 to 1200 ml (three to five cups) of watermelon juice, and save the extra for more margaritas. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the juice and remove any pulp or seeds, but you may not even bother to do so.
    • Once you have your freshly-squeezed watermelon juice, pour it in a cocktail shaker. Squeeze limes to get one and a half tablespoon of juice and add it to the shaker together with the tequila and a handful of ice. Shake vigorously until all ingredients are well-blended. Take a sip and see if you need to add more lime juice for acidity, watermelon juice for sweetness, or tequila for booziness.
    • Once you adjust the flavor of your margarita as you want, it’s time to make the salted rim. Pour some salt in a bowl or plate, cut a lemon into wedges and take one to rub it against the rim of two glasses so that they are wet. Then, turn the glasses upside down into the plate with salt to create the famous salted rim. No margarita is really complete without this.
    • Add some ice in the glasses and pour over your watermelon margarita.
    • Enjoy while fresh. If you have extra watermelon juice, keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days. In that way, you’ll have the main ingredient ready for whenever you want a drink or two. Just add the rest of the ingredients as instructed and your watermelon margarita will be ready in less than 5 minutes.
