How to Make McDonald’s Sausage and Egg McMuffin

If you’re reading this post, you’ve probably had a Sausage and Egg McMuffin before. And if you’ve had a Sausage and Egg McMuffin before, you are probably already familiar with everything that goes into them. Obviously, the classic ingredients in a McMuffin are an English Muffin, a sausage patty, a steamed egg, and a slice of American cheese. Making this Egg McMuffin is quite easy but there is one major trick that McDonald’s employs in this sandwich.

In order to keep the egg in a perfect circle so that it fits snugly onto the muffin, it is cooked inside a metal ring mold. If you don’t have a ring mold, you can always use the outer ring from a mason jar lid. Then, to get that fluffy egg, it is steamed rather than fried. Other than that, there are just a few simple steps to making a tasty homemade Sausage and Egg McMuffin, here they are:

1. Patty your ground sausage and sear it on the stove.

2. Remove the sausage from the pan and let it rest.

3. Cook the egg by breaking it into a greased ring mold in the pan and add a little water to let the egg steam for a couple of minutes. The egg whites should be set.

4. Toast the muffin, melt the cheese onto the egg, and assemble the sandwich.

5. Add any condiments you like and enjoy!

    Ingredients

    • 1 tablespoon canola oil

    • 2 ounces ground breakfast sausage

    • cooking spray as needed

    • 1 egg, cracked and

    • 1 English Muffin, split in half

    • 1 tablespoon softened butter, split in two

    • 1 slice American cheese (or any other cheese you prefer)

    • salt and pepper to taste

    • 1/2 cup water

    Directions

    • 1. Use your hands to form a thin, even patty out of the breakfast sausage. The patty should be roughly the same diameter as the muffin. Season the patty with salt and pepper.
    • 2. Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a skillet. Sear the sausage for 4-5 minutes on each side until it is crispy and cooked through.
    • Remove the sausage from the pan and let it sit on a paper-towel lined plate. Quickly wipe out the skillet with a paper towel and return to medium-high heat.
    • Spray a metal ring mold with cooking spray. (Or the outer part of a mason jar lid.) Place the mold into the pan and melt half the butter inside the ring. Crack the egg into it and gently poke it with a fork to break the yolk. Season the egg with salt and pepper. Pour the water into the skillet and cover with a lid. Steam the egg for 2-3 minutes or until the whites are set.
    • Meanwhile, toast the English Muffin in the toaster and spread with the remaining butter.
    • Remove the lid from the pan and take the ring out from around the egg. Place the cheese on top of the egg and cook for 30 more seconds to allow the cheese to melt. Remove the egg from the pan and assemble the sandwich with the sausage, egg, and muffin. Enjoy!
