What could be better than waking up to fresh, warm fluffy pancakes one morning? Waking up to fresh, warm fluffy pancakes for two mornings, or three… Or however mornings you want them! Knowing how to reheat pancakes is a real skill, saving time in the morning is normally a necessity, especially if you are running behind (as I often am). In this recipe we are going to show you how to reheat pancakes.

Different Ways To Reheat Pancakes

Making pancakes in a small batch is a little tricky. Sure, you can scale down the flour and milk. But have you ever tried to serve half an egg? No, us neither. Unless you are very good at math there is a good chance that you’ll have to make a minimum number of pancakes, and therefore have some left over. If you have made them fat and fluffy (just how they should be), then you may find that they are quite filling, and just don’t want to waste them. Let’s look at some tips and tricks, and few methods that will show you how to reheat pancakes.

1. Reheating Pancakes in a Pan

Well, they are called ‘pan-cakes’ and it worked the first-time round, so there is no reason why it wont work a second time. There are a few things to keep in mind though. First, unlike when you originally made them from batter, you aren’t really trying to cook the pancakes, you are just warming them through. For that reason, keep the pan on a low light.

You will also want to make sure the pancakes don’t stick. They may have accumulated some moisture and may be slightly softer than the first-time round. To guard against this, brush the pan with a light coating of oil or butter.  Here’s how to do it

  1. Put a frying pan on a low to medium heat, as we suggested, brush with a light coating of oil or butter.
  2. Place a single layer of pancakes into the pan, we can normally manage 4 comfortably.
  3. Allow the pancakes to heat for 30 seconds and then flip.
  4. Repeat this twice for each side, or until the pancakes are hot. Then, simply serve and enjoy!

2. Reheating Pancakes in a Microwave

Ok, you’ll gain plenty of points for time saving here. Using a microwave is probably the most convenient method. However, don’t expect the pancakes to be quite as good as they were when you made them. Microwaves cook from the middle outwards and can cause the pancakes to ‘steam’ themselves a little, making them a little soft (and sometimes a bit chewy).

Remember that with microwaves, if you cook more food then it will take longer, so you’ll have to adjust your cooking times accordingly. To keep the math easy, we have worked on 20 seconds per pancake. So, three pancakes will take about a minute. Here’s what you do: –

  1. Line a microwave dish with paper sheets or baking paper and place your desired number of pancakes flat. Don’t stack them or they will heat unevenly.
  2. Working on 20 seconds of cooking time per pancake, set the timer accordingly with the power set to high.
  3. Remove your pancakes and eat immediately

3. Reheating Pancakes in the Oven

This method is by far the easiest and allows you to do other things (such as making a blueberry sauce or whipping up some fresh cream, yum). It will require a little bit of thought and planning before you heat your pancakes, but heating the oven should take roughly the same amount of time as it would to whip up some fresh pancake batter so you certainly aren’t losing time (or making any mess). Here’s what to do.

  1. Set your oven to 320 degrees Fahrenheit, it should take around 15-20 minutes to get up to temperature.
  2. Place your pancakes flat on a baking dish, again don’t stack them.
  3. Cover the top with either baking paper or kitchen foil.
  4. Leave in the oven for around 10 minutes.
  5. Serve immediately

4. Reheating Pancakes Using a Toaster

We feel a little bit guilty about this, it’s so easy it feels like we are actually cheating. It’s a really useful kitchen hack! The key to having a good result is not to set your toaster oven too high. As we said you aren’t trying to cook the pancakes, just warm them until they taste great!

This method is super simple. Just pop each individual pancake into a toaster slot and wait for them to pop up. We’d suggest no longer than 2 minutes. The best bit is the edges go ever so slightly crispy and toasted, giving an interesting texture.

Tips & Tricks

  • You can freeze pancakes! Why not make a really big batch and then you’ve got a delicious and convenient breakfast which you can enjoy on a leisurely Sunday morning or even on the go? Its super simple. First allow your pancakes to cool. We like to freeze them as one single flat layer on a baking sheet, then once they are solid, portion them up into zip lock bags once frozen.
  • You don’t need to thaw pancakes before you reheat them. Our guide below tells you how to reheat pancakes that have been taken out of the refrigerator. For frozen pancakes, follow the same advice just increase the cooking time. The trick is not to cook them too quickly or you will end up with an overly cooked outside and a stone cold center.

Conclusion

So, if you wanted to know how to reheat pancakes, you’re pretty much covered. Our favourite method is in the oven, just because it’s the least amount of work. But that said if we are really rushing then we use the toaster. The microwave is quicker, but we really like a little bit of crunch and toasted goodness. Whichever way you choose remember this one rule. Reheat pancakes low and slow to ensure a perfect consistency. If you know of any other quick ways, feel free to comment and share your secret!
